On being a Host/Model/ Fitness Icon

How did you start your career in the entertainment industry?
My first big break was in TV hosting a show called ‘SCORE’, which aired in Singapore and Malaysia on the okto channel. It did pretty well so I hosted both seasons 1 and 2 with my co-host, Jibby, who is now based in LA. Then the next big step happened after I moved from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and got an awesome gig in February 2011 with hitz.fm as their Hollywood news reporter! Both were very fun jobs, in front of the camera and on radio, and I feel natural at them. I’m really blessed to have gotten that exposure to start in this industry because I truly love what I do.

You look great and we love your toned physique! Tell us your initial inspiration that drove you to work this hard for such figure? We know the first stage to get over laziness is one of the biggest challenge!
Motivation is the most important factor in getting fit and staying fit. When I was about 19 years old I gained a lot of weight and wasn’t happy with how I felt or looked. Just before I started getting into fitness, I was given this book called ‘Body For Life’. I found a lot of the stories from the individuals who signed up for the ‘BFL’ nutrition and exercise program to be very inspiring, which was what got me started on my fitness journey – it is a journey, and takes a lot of reminding about why you got started to stay disciplined as it is very personal for every individual. Now fitness is an essential part of my lifestyle, but I still find bouts of extra motivation mostly though listening to new music and reading fitness publications. I share a lot of my favorite workout tracks on my blog withlovefay.com and Facebook Fan Page, along with routines and exercise tips to motivate others. In a way, it helps me be even more motivated too.

Let’s say you’re having a very hectic working week filled with shows or shoots, what is your ‘must do in-between-work-workout’ that you can’t possibly miss despite the tight schedule?
Going without breakfast makes me very grumpy. I always make time for breakfast; it’s the most important meal of the day so it’s good to start with something healthy and full of complex carbohydrates like a bowl of wholegrain cereal or oats with blueberries. But if I’m rushing out the door, I make sure I take at least an apple or a non-sugary protein bar with me.

I’m your biggest fan, what can I do to grab your attention?
Those who’ve read my blog often say they find it to be very motivating and a few were even inspired to start exercising and eating healthily. The ones who really grab my attention are the people who share their sincere and personal journeys of success. It’s nice to know that I’ve been a positive influence for some of my fans and that’s a big part of why I’m doing what I do.

What is your biggest accomplishment?
Being on the cover of a fitness magazine! I’ve done covers for men’s magazines before but to be on the cover of Shape (Malaysia) is a personal accomplishment that I definitely worked hard for, you could say all the way back to when I was 19.

What do you like to do for fun?
When I’m not at the gym, I like to spend my time trying out different sports activities. I really enjoy surfing, kickboxing, and archery. I do like to relax sometimes too though believe it or not, so an evening on the couch in front of a good DVD goes a long way to my recovery.

Favourite type of Music?
I love listening to hiphop or dance when I’m at gym. Anything by Rihanna, Lil Wayne or Kanye West gets me going. I’m also a big fan of high energy party mixes by guys like DJ Bento and SmithAgentSmith. but I do have a soft spot for rock bands like Jimmy Eat World and Blink-182.

What’s your favourite sport and why do you love it?
In-line skating! It was the first sport I picked up when I just about 7 years old and I learned it all on my own. At that age, for the first time, I felt a great sense of accomplishment and independence.

Do you have pets? If yes, tell us their names!
I’m not ready to make that commitment yet as I’m always traveling. But I’ve always wanted a pug, so I bought this stuffed toy and named him Yoda. He travels with me sometimes.

What are your favourite foods?
I could eat authentic Thai food everyday, with chilli peppers sprinkled on top of everything! In fact, I love anything with chili pepper. Except dessert, of course.

What is your idea of a perfect getaway?
An island retreat or a spontaneous roadtrip. There are so many places in Malaysia where you can do that which is part of why I love living here.

Any interesting hobbies you’d like to share with us?
I could spend hours on the internet looking for new music from my favorite artists, bands or DJs. I think that counts as a hobby!

What kind of character of the opposite sex that you find appealing?
A gentleman with a great sense of humor and positive attitude. Yes, I am referring to someone in particular ;)

What is your favourite fashion style?
Classic military style when casual. Bold with a touch of feminine.

What is the best pick-up line that you’ve ever received?
Unless you’re Jim Carrey, pick-up lines are a bad idea because girls simply don’t like guys who try too hard or come off rude. A casual “Hi, how are you? My name’s ____.” usually works and if she’s interested, the conversation will naturally flow.

What about the cheesiest pick-up line that you’ve ever received?
The cheesy ones are the easiest to forget so I never paid much attention or remember any in particular to be honest! But one guy asked “Do you do karate?” at a kickboxing event so I naturally said “No, why?” To which he replied “Wow! Cuz your body is kickin’!” Lame!

If you could wish for anything from a Genie, what would it be?
The ability to pick up any skill just by watching a demo or other people doing it. Unfortunately, in the real world, there are no shortcuts and you have to work hard to get the best out of what you do.

Tell us a motto that you live by.
“You’ll never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have.” – Unknown. To me this quote holds a very simple and reflective message about self-motivation and having to choose to push your own boundaries.
